چکیده

The unequal area facility layout problem (UA-FLP) comprises a class of extremely difficult and widely applicable optimization problems arising in diverse areas and meeting the requirements for real-world applications. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) have recently proven their effectiveness in finding (sub) optimal solutions to many NP-hard problems such as UA-FLP. A main issue in such approach is related to the genet ic encoding and to the evolutionary mechanism implemented, which must allow the efficient exploration of a wide solution space, preserving the feasibility of the solutions and ensuring the convergence towards the optimum. In addition, in realistic situation s where several design issues must be taken into account, the layout problem falls in the broader frame work of multi-objective optimization problems. To date, there are only a few multi-objective FLP approaches, and most of them employ over-simplified optimization techniques which eventually influence the quality of the solutions obtained and the performance of the optimization procedure. In this paper, this difficulty is overcome by approaching the problem in two subsequent steps: in the first step, the Pareto-optimal solutions are determined by employing Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) implementing four separate fitness functions within a Pareto evolutionary procedure, following the general structure of Non-dominated Ranking Genetic Algorithm (NRGA) and the subsequent selection of the optimal solution is carried out by means of the multi-criteria decision-making procedure Electre. This procedure allows the decision maker to express his preferences on the basis of the knowledge of candidate solution set. Quantitative and qualitative objectives are considered referring to the slicing-tree layout representation scheme. The numerical results obtained outperform previous referenced approaches, thus confirming the effectiveness of the proce dure proposed. 2013 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms for a preventive healthcare facility network design

Preventive healthcare aims at reducing the likelihood and severity of potentially life-threatening illnesses by protection and early detection. In this paper, a bi-objective mathematical model is proposed to design a network of preventive healthcare facilities so as to minimize total travel and waiting time as well as establishment and staffing cost. Moreover, each facility acts as M/M/1 queuin...

Solving a New Multi-objective Inventory-Routing Problem by a Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm

This paper considers a multi-period, multi-product inventory-routing problem in a two-level supply chain consisting of a distributor and a set of customers. This problem is modeled with the aim of minimizing bi-objectives, namely the total system cost (including startup, distribution and maintenance costs) and risk-based transportation. Products are delivered to customers by some heterogeneous ...

Tree Structure Modeling and Genetic Algorithm-based Approach to Unequal-area Facility Layout Problem

A tree structure model has been proposed for representing the unequal-area facility layout. Each facility has a different rectangular shape specified by its area and aspect ratio. In this layout problem, based on the assumption that the shop floor has enough space for laying out the facilities, no constraint is considered for a shop floor. Objectives are minimizing total part movement between f...

Facility layout problems have been generally solved either hierarchically or integrated into other phases of plant design. In this paper, a hybrid method is introduced so that clustering and facilities layout can be simultaneously optimized. Each cluster is formed by a group of connected facilities and selection of the most appropriate cluster configuration is aimed. Since exact method by MIP i...
